How do HeyLead and HubSpot attribution work?
HubSpot attribution is built into the HubSpot CRM and Marketing Hub. When someone fills in a form tracked by HubSpot, the contact gets an "original source" that records how they first arrived, and Marketing Hub's attribution reports connect contacts back to the channels that brought them.
HeyLead is lead-source tracking software that shows which channel, campaign and page brought every lead, including leads from AI assistants. It runs from one script tag or a WordPress plugin, captures the forms on your site automatically and saves each submission with its first touch, last touch and every visit in between. You see the result in the HeyLead dashboard, whatever CRM you use.
So the two tools come at the same question from different sides. HubSpot attribution is one feature of a large marketing platform, and it is at its best when your whole funnel already lives in HubSpot. HeyLead is a small tool that does one job, showing where each lead came from, and passes that information on to wherever your leads go next, HubSpot included.
Do you need both HeyLead and HubSpot?
You need both HeyLead and HubSpot only in some cases. If you already pay for a higher HubSpot Marketing Hub tier and your team uses its attribution reports, HubSpot may already answer "which marketing brings our leads and revenue?" and HeyLead would add little.
Many teams still use both, for a few common reasons:
- They are on a lower HubSpot tier. They use HubSpot as their CRM but don't pay for the tiers with multi-touch revenue attribution. HeyLead gives them a lead source dashboard without an upgrade.
- They want the story behind each lead. HubSpot's original source tells you how a contact first arrived. HeyLead's journey shows every visit, so you can see that someone found you on Google, came back through a Facebook ad and then filled in the form after reading a ChatGPT answer.
- Not every form goes to HubSpot. Sites built on WordPress, Webflow or Wix often use Gravity Forms, Elementor, Contact Form 7, Typeform or Jotform. HeyLead captures those forms automatically, and the source can then travel into HubSpot.
- Owners want a plain answer. HeyLead's dashboard is built for business owners who want to see which channels bring customers without building custom reports.
When teams use both, HeyLead does the tracking and HubSpot stays the CRM. See how HeyLead connects to HubSpot for the setup.
What does setup look like for each tool?
HubSpot attribution setup depends on how much of your marketing already runs through HubSpot and which Marketing Hub tier you are on. Revenue reports are only as good as the deal records behind them, so the quality of the report also depends on your team keeping the CRM up to date. Check HubSpot's docs for the exact steps on your tier.
HeyLead's setup is one script tag or the WordPress plugin, and takes about 5 minutes. Forms are detected and captured automatically, so you don't need hidden fields to get lead sources into HeyLead. A live install checker confirms the script is working, and the guide to installing the tracking script covers every platform, from WordPress and Shopify to Next.js.
| Setup step | HeyLead | HubSpot attribution |
|---|---|---|
| Add tracking to the site | One script tag or WordPress plugin | Check HubSpot's docs |
| Capture forms from other tools | Automatic | Check HubSpot's docs |
| Hidden fields | Optional, only to push source to a CRM | Check HubSpot's docs |
| Revenue per channel | Mark leads as Customer with a value | Revenue attribution in higher tiers |
| Multi-touch models | Not offered | Higher Marketing Hub tiers |
| Typical time to first lead | About 5 minutes to install | Depends on your HubSpot setup |
What do you see in each tool's reports?
HubSpot attribution reports show contacts by source, and in the higher Marketing Hub tiers you get multi-touch revenue attribution models that share credit across several interactions. That is real depth: a marketing team with long sales cycles can see how blog posts, emails, ads and events each played a part in a closed deal. HeyLead does not offer these multi-touch revenue models.
HeyLead's reports are simpler on purpose. The dashboard shows leads, customers and revenue by channel, campaign and landing page, with a plain-English summary of what changed. Each lead has its own page with first touch, last touch, every visit, device and country. You mark a lead as New, Qualified, Customer or Lost and add a deal value, and the revenue shows up next to the channel that brought it.
The difference is a matter of who reads the report. HubSpot's multi-touch models suit a marketing team that wants to weigh every touchpoint. HeyLead suits an owner or small team who wants to know which channels bring customers and to check any single lead in a few seconds. If you are not sure which view you need, our guide to first-touch vs last-touch attribution explains the trade-off.
How do they track leads from ChatGPT and AI assistants?
HeyLead and HubSpot both treat AI assistants as a source of their own. HubSpot has a native AI referrals source, so contacts who arrive from AI tools can be grouped instead of falling into Referral or Direct.
HeyLead puts these visits in an AI Referral channel and names the assistant: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Claude. You can see which assistant sent each lead, which page they landed on and whether they became a customer. Because HeyLead checks AI assistants before UTM tags and the referring website, these leads are not lost when the link carries no tags. The AI Lead Tracker page shows how this works.
If you run both tools, you can compare HeyLead's AI Referral numbers with HubSpot's AI referrals source. Small differences are normal, because each tool has its own rules for classifying a visit.
What about phone calls and other channels?
Neither HeyLead nor HubSpot attribution should be picked for phone call tracking from this page alone. HeyLead does not track phone calls yet (it is on the roadmap), and it does not track live chat. For HubSpot, check HubSpot's docs for how calls and chats are tracked and attributed on your plan.
For website forms, HeyLead classifies every lead in a fixed order: your custom channel rules first, then AI assistants, then ad click IDs (gclid, gbraid, wbraid, msclkid, ttclid, li_fat_id and twclid), then UTM tags, then the referring website, and Direct only when nothing else is known. Custom channel rules let you name your own channels, for example a newsletter or a partner site, so they don't get mixed into Referral.
How do they fit with your CRM and other tools?
HubSpot attribution only works inside HubSpot. That is its strength if HubSpot is your CRM: attribution sits next to email, ads, deals and contact records, with no data to move between tools.
HeyLead works with whatever CRM you use. It sends each lead's source to HubSpot, Zoho CRM, Salesforce, Pipedrive and other tools through Zapier or webhooks, and to Google Sheets directly. For HubSpot today, the source travels through Zapier, a webhook or hidden fields on an embedded HubSpot form, and a native HubSpot sync is coming soon. HeyLead also sends email notifications for new leads and lets you add team members.
| Integration question | HeyLead | HubSpot attribution |
|---|---|---|
| Which CRMs does it work with? | Any CRM via Zapier or webhooks; Google Sheets | HubSpot CRM |
| Webhooks and Zapier | Yes | Check HubSpot's docs |
| Email and ads in the same tool | No | Yes, in HubSpot |
| Multi-site plans for agencies | Yes | Check HubSpot's pricing page |
How do the pricing models compare?
HubSpot attribution is not sold on its own. Attribution reports come with HubSpot Marketing Hub, and multi-touch revenue attribution is in the higher tiers. If you already pay for one of those tiers, attribution costs you nothing extra. If you don't, getting it means upgrading your whole Marketing Hub plan. Check HubSpot's pricing page for current tiers and prices.
HeyLead is priced for lead source tracking alone. Single-site plans cost $29, $49, $99 per month for 1,000, 2,000 or 5,000 leads, and multi-site plans for agencies start at $199/month with unlimited leads. The 14-day trial costs $2.99, plans are monthly and you can cancel anytime. There is no free plan. See HeyLead pricing for every plan and limit.
Which should you choose?
Choose HubSpot attribution if you already pay for a higher Marketing Hub tier, need multi-touch revenue attribution models, and want attribution reported next to your email, ads and deals in one system. In that case, HubSpot does things HeyLead does not.
Choose HeyLead if you are not on HubSpot, use a lower HubSpot tier, or simply want to see where every lead came from in a plain dashboard with the full journey behind each one, for a low monthly price.
Use both if HubSpot is your CRM but you want HeyLead's per-lead journeys and AI Referral channel. HeyLead tracks the lead and sends its source into HubSpot. If your CRM files too many leads under Direct, read why your CRM says Direct.
