What you get

Know exactly where your leads come from

Lead source tracking means saving where each lead came from, like a Google ad, a search result, an email or ChatGPT, together with the lead itself. Instead of guessing from traffic reports, you can see which marketing brings real enquiries and which only brings visits.

  • Channel

    Paid Search, Email, AI Referral…

  • Source

    google, newsletter, chatgpt.com

  • Campaign and keyword

From your UTM tags and ads

  • Landing page

    The first page they saw

  • First and last visit

How they found you, what brought them back

  • Every visit in between

Pages read, device, days to decide

Step by step

How does lead source tracking work?

HeyLead reads the clues every visit already carries and keeps them until the visitor fills in a form. You don't change your forms or your website.

  1. 01

Someone clicks through to your website

The link carries clues about where it came from: campaign tags (UTM tags), an ad click ID such as gclid, or the website they were on before.

  2. 02

    HeyLead picks the lead source

It checks your own rules first, then signs of an AI assistant, ad click IDs, UTM tags and finally the referring website. The visit goes into one of 11 channels.

  3. 03

    Every visit is remembered

If the same person comes back later, HeyLead adds the new visit to their journey on your own domain, so the first source isn't lost.

  4. 04

The form arrives with its source

When they fill in any form on your site, the lead appears in your dashboard with its channel, campaign, landing page and every visit before it.

11 channels

Track every marketing channel

Every visit is sorted into one of 11 channels, always shown in the same colour. You can add your own rules for partners, events or a single affiliate.

Attribution

First-touch and last-touch attribution

Most people visit more than once before they get in touch. HeyLead keeps both ends of the journey, so you can give credit to the right marketing.

First touch
The visit where someone first found you. It shows which marketing brings new people in, such as a blog post found on Google.
Last touch
The visit when they filled in your form. It shows what made them act, such as a Google ad they clicked a week later.

UTM tags

Track UTM parameters automatically

UTM parameters are tags you add to the end of a link, like ?utm_source=newsletter, so you can tell your campaigns apart. HeyLead reads all five from every visit and saves them with the lead, along with ad click IDs from Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok and LinkedIn.

Why HeyLead

Why choose HeyLead for lead source tracking?

Set up in minutes, without code

Install the WordPress plugin or paste one line into your site settings. HeyLead finds your forms by itself.

No hidden fields to build

Most lead source tools need hidden fields on every form. HeyLead captures the source without them.

AI assistants counted properly

Leads from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude get their own channel instead of hiding in Direct.

Careful with your visitors' data

Data is stored on your own domain, visitor IP addresses are never stored, and consent mode works with your cookie banner.

FAQ

Lead source tracking questions

What is lead source tracking?

Lead source tracking records where each lead came from, such as a Google ad, a search result, a social post, an email or an AI assistant, and saves it with the lead. It shows which marketing brings enquiries, not just visits.

What is the difference between lead source tracking and lead source attribution?

They describe the same job. Tracking is collecting the source of every visit and lead; attribution is deciding which source gets the credit. HeyLead does both: it records every visit and shows the first and last source for each lead.

Do I need UTM tags for lead source tracking to work?

No. HeyLead also uses ad click IDs and the referring website, so Google search, AI assistants and most ads are recognised without tags. UTM tags help for links that carry no referrer, such as some email and social apps.

Which forms does HeyLead track?

Any form on your own website with an email field, a phone field or a message box, including WordPress form plugins, Webflow, Wix, Shopify and custom React forms. Forms inside a frame from another site, like Typeform, are connected with hidden fields.

Can I see the lead source in my CRM?

Yes. Send it with a webhook or Zapier, or let HeyLead fill hidden fields in forms that post straight into your CRM. Native HubSpot and Zoho sync is coming soon.

Why do some leads still show as Direct?

Some apps open links without saying where they came from, and some people type your address. Those visits have no source to record. Adding UTM tags to links you share in emails and social apps reduces them.
