The basics
What is UTM tracking?
UTM tracking means adding short tags to the end of your links, like ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=spring-sale, and reading them when someone clicks. It tells you which campaign, email or post sent each visitor, so you can compare them fairly.
What UTM tracking answers
- Which newsletter or social post brought enquiries?
- Which ad in a campaign works best?
- Did the spring sale bring more leads than the webinar?
- Which partner or affiliate link sends real customers?
Why most UTM tracking breaks
UTM tags disappear after the first page. HeyLead remembers them.
UTM tags only live in the address of the page someone lands on. Click to another page, close the tab or come back next week, and they're gone, so the form never knows which campaign sent the lead.
Without HeyLead
- Visitor lands on /offer?utm_campaign=spring-sale
- Clicks to /pricing: the tags are gone
- Comes back 5 days later and fills in the form
- Lead source: Direct
With HeyLead
- Tags saved on the first visit, on your own domain
- Kept as they browse, for up to 13 months
- The return visit is added to their journey
- Lead source: Paid Social · spring-sale · video-a
What's captured
All five UTM parameters, plus ad click IDs
HeyLead reads every tag on every visit and saves them with the lead, for both the first visit and the visit when they filled in your form.
| UTM tag | What it tells you | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the click came from | google, facebook, newsletter |
| utm_medium | The type of marketing | cpc, paid_social, email |
| utm_campaign | Your campaign name | spring-sale, webinar-oct |
| utm_term | The ad keyword | 24 hour plumber |
| utm_content | Which ad or link was clicked | video-a, footer-link |

UTMs in your CRM
Send UTM values to HubSpot, Zoho or any CRM
If your form posts straight into your CRM, add hidden fields and HeyLead fills them on every submission. Name them like your CRM already does, or use a placeholder. No code, and new forms work the same way.
- Hidden fields named utm_source, utm_campaign, gclid… are filled automatically
- Or set a field's default value to a placeholder like [utm_source] or [channel]
- Typeform, Jotform and Tally frames get the UTM values in their address
- Prefer no hidden fields? Send everything with a webhook or Zapier

Reports
See leads and customers for every campaign
Click any channel to see its sources, then campaigns, then keywords. Each row shows leads, customers and revenue, so you know which campaign to scale and which to stop.
No tags? No problem
What if a link has no UTM tags?
UTM tags make reports clearer, but you don't need them everywhere. HeyLead still works out the source of untagged visits.
Ad clicks
Google and Microsoft ad clicks are recognised from their click IDs, even if you forget to tag the ad.
AI assistants
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, and Perplexity and Gemini pass their domain, so AI visits are labelled too.
Search and other sites
Without tags or click IDs, HeyLead uses the website the visitor came from, such as Google search or a directory.

FAQ
UTM tracking questions
What is UTM tracking software?
UTM tracking software reads the UTM tags on the links people click, like utm_source and utm_campaign, and saves them so you can report on each campaign. HeyLead goes a step further and attaches those tags to every lead that comes from the campaign.
How long does HeyLead remember a visitor's UTM tags?
Up to 13 months on the same browser. HeyLead stores them on your own domain, so if someone first clicks your ad and fills in a form weeks later, the lead still shows the campaign that found them. Some browsers, like Safari, clear this kind of storage sooner for people who don't come back.
Does HeyLead save first-touch or last-touch UTMs?
Both. Each lead keeps the UTM tags from the visit that first found you and from the visit when they filled in the form, plus every visit in between.
Can I send UTM values to HubSpot or my CRM?
Yes. Add hidden fields named utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and so on, or use placeholders like [utm_source], and HeyLead fills them on every form. You can also send them with a webhook or Zapier.
Do UTMs work with Typeform, Jotform or Tally?
Yes. HeyLead adds the UTM values to the address of forms that run inside a frame. Create hidden fields or URL parameters with the same names in the form tool to store them.
Do I have to tag every link?
No. Ad click IDs, AI assistants and referring websites are recognised without tags. UTM tags matter most for emails, social posts and other links that don't say where they came from.
