“Direct” should mean someone typed your address. In practice it's the bucket for every visit a tool couldn't explain. When it's 40% of your leads, the real story is hidden.
The five usual causes
- The source is only checked on the page the form is on, not the first visit
- Redirects drop the UTM tags before the page loads
- AI assistants and apps don't pass a referrer
- Forms in iframes can't see the parent page's data
- Cookie banners block tracking until consent, then forget the source
How to fix it
Store the source on the first visit, in first-party storage on your own domain, and carry it to the form whenever the visitor converts, even days later. That one change usually turns most Direct leads into named channels.
If your report can't tell a Google Ad from a bookmark, it can't tell you where to spend next month's budget.
